New Tappan Zee Toll System Causes Lane Closures In Rockland

ORANGETOWN, N.Y. -- Commuters looking forward to the new cashless toll system on the Tappan Zee Bridge in Rockland County will have to put up with a few lane closures before the system can be put in place as construction continues to implement the system, according to New York State Thurway officials.

New electronic toll equipment goes live April 23 for the Tappan Zee Bridge but will cause some lane closures while getting the system in place.

The program, also called the all-electronic toll collection, which is scheduled to be activated on Saturday, April 23, is still under construction near southbound exit 10 in South Nyack and Nyack at the US Route 9W on-ramp, and will necessitate overnight lane closures in the area on Friday.

In addition, periodic traffic stops lasting up to 10 minutes of all four lanes of the southbound Thruway from exit 11 to the Tappan Zee Bridge will occur between 12 a.m. and 5 a.m. overnight.

To ensure the public’s safety, the New York State Police will stop and hold all traffic approaching the area immediately before the traffic stops go into effect.

Additionally, preparations for future work will necessitate mid-day lane closures on the Tappan Zee Bridge, at the northbound Thruway near exit 9 (Tarrytown - Sleepy Hollow - US Route 9) and the southbound Thruway near exit 11 from Monday, April 11 to Thursday, April 14.
