The Gold Award is the highest award a Girl Scout can earn and requires the completion of a leadership project of at least 80 hours. Each girl must discover an issue in the community, connect with experts and community members, and take action to effect positive change.
“It’s important for people to eat fresh vegetables,” McKiever said in a statement. “All the vegetables grown in the garden were harvested and given to the food pantry. Through this project, I learned the importance of helping others and had a positive impact on their lives.”
McKiever has been a Girl Scout in Troop No. 912 since kindergarten and says the program has prepared her for the future.
“Girl Scouting has taught me valuable life skills that I will need as a manager, such as organizational skills, time management, and treating everyone with respect,” she said.
McKiever graduated from Suffern High School in June and is currently a first-year student at SUNY Plattsburgh, where she is studying hospitality management.
