PEARL RIVER, N.Y. – A group of organizers is starting a petition drive with an eye towards letting voters decide whether to incorporate Pearl River, according to lohud.com.
The group, calling themselves the Village of Pearl River Exploratory Committee, is looking towards raising $50,000 for a survey of local residents, lohud.com said.
Lead organizer Keith Kennedy said that signatures from 20 percent of the town's residents would put the proposed measure to a ballot, reported lohud.com.
The proposed village's borders would match the Pearl River Fire District's boundaries - south to New Jersey, west to Ramapo, north to Clarkstown and east to Orangetown, according to lohud.com.
Services like police and public works would remain with Orangetown, while the village would handle building, zoning and enforcement, according to lohud.com.
Kennedy noted that the push to incorporate was due to three recent development proposals – the Hillside project, expansion of the Anellotech biofuel facility, and the Club at Pearl River senior community, lohud.com said.
32 percent of Orangetown's residents live in Pearl River, according to the 2010 census, lohud.com noted.
