North Salem is in for its first major winter snowstorm, probably beginning late Friday afternoon and continuing into Saturday. The National Weather Service forecasts as much as 12 inches of snow in the North Salem area.
Intermittent rain and sleet may accompany the snow. Wind gusts may reach 60 to 75 mph and may significantly effect transportation and power supplies.
“We’re doing what we do to prepare for every storm,” said Hanaburgh. “We get ready if they predict four or more inches. The snow removal budget is still in good shape because we haven’t had any bad storms yet this winter.”
Part of the preparation is spraying the roads with a salt-brine solution, which helps fight the hard-pack and makes the roads easier to scrape.
“We start salting as soon as the snow starts. Even with a little dusting of snow we still salt the roads,” said Hanaburgh. “The little storms are more of a nuisance than anything else.”
All North Salem schools will be closed Friday Feb. 8.
