A Hudson Valley school district is defending its decision to hire a teacher who allegedly sexually assaulted a student in another district just days before a civil suit was filed. The lawsuit accuses the former teacher in Northern Westchester of grooming a then 16-year-old student at Walter Panas High School in Cortlandt to have sexual relations on school grounds. A popular Northern Westchester teacher died unexpectedly on Monday, Feb. 22. Danielle Marie Coletta of Peekskill was 48 years old. She was a sixth-grade teacher at Mildred E. Strang Middle School in Yorktown. Her career began at Columbus Elementary School in Hawthorne, teaching second grade, followed by many years at Brookside Elementary School in Yorktown, as a third-grade teacher. Two more schools in the Hudson Valley are closed for in-person learning after positive cases of COVID-19. The Lakeland Central School District announced on Wednesday evening, Oct. 7 that it was notified earlier in the day that two students were identified as COVID-19 positive, one at Walter Panas High School, and one at Lakeland Copper Beech Middle School. A high school in Northern Westchester has switched to remote learning after a student tested positive for COVID-19. The Lakeland Central School District said it received word late Sunday evening, Oct. 4 from the parent of the student at Walter Panas High School in Cortlandt who is now infected with the virus. Two Northern Westchester School Districts Add Armed Security Officers
The Westchester County Department of Public Safety will provide four police officers to serve as School Resource Officers (SRO) in the Lakeland and Hendrick Hudson School Districts. The positions were created through an amendment to an existing intermunicipal agreement (IMA) which adds three new SRO’s where the existing IMA previously provided one SRO at Walter Panas High School. Some of Westchester County’s best and brightest students were among those chosen as semifinalists in the National Merit Scholarship Program, which celebrates academic achievement in high school students. On Wednesday, 16,000 high school seniors were chosen from around the country. Cortlandt Man Admits To Harassing Lakeland Schools Superintendent
A Northern Westchester man has admitted to sending more than two dozen harassing voicemails to Lakeland Schools Superintendent George Stone for several months, leading to an order of protection. Police said it is alleged that between Jan. 17 and June 17 this year, Cortlandt Manor resident Anthony Cassone, 55, “left approximately 25 voicemails on the victim’s voicemail system that served no legitimate purpose and caused the victim annoyance and alarm.” At the victim’s request, a criminal summons was obtained from the Yorktown Justice Court on June 28 for a charge of second-degree harassment…
