SOMERS, N.Y. -The Somers girls varsity basketball team got back on the winning track Tuesday with a 57-20 victory over host North Salem.
The Tuskers doubled up North Salem in the first quarter 14-7 and then took command in the second quarter, going on a 14-0 run on the home team to grab a 28-7 lead at halftime. The second half proved to be much of the same.
Somers was led by sharpshooting Marisa Gardineer, who poured in 21 points, including five three-pointers. Caitlyn Opfer also had a strong game with 17 points, while Jamie Sisca added nine points.
North Salem, which lost to Somers 59-18 in December, was led by Jamie Rose Zappolo with six points. Maggie McCormack and Sydney Cardoza had five points apiece.
Somers, which improved to 8-1, won its first seven games this season before having its undefeated streak snapped by Brewster. The Tuskers take the court again Thursday at Mahopac.
North Salem dropped to 3-4 and will play John Jay Thursday at home in the Boosters Club Basketball Tournament.
