NORTH SALEM, N.Y. - Charles Hubany, who used to make automotive repairs, eventually sold his business and found a new and very gratifying career as a security guard. Nowadays he works at the PQ School from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., then covers at the high school until 5 p.m.
Theres always a mood of happiness at PQ, he said. The children never get yelled at. Theyre calm.
Part of his job is to, meet and greet people. He checks them in and directs visitors to the area they want. Of Principal Roberta Reiner, he said, she makes a great working atmosphere. Everything is happy here. Even the colors are happy. When you walk into one of the offices, they look up and greet you with a smile.
Hubany worked exclusively at the high school for four years before coming to PQ. I knew that place so well, I knew every crack in the sidewalks. I knew almost every kid by name. Im still getting to know it here.
There are good and bad security jobs, he explained. Describing an earlier job, he said, I didnt like covering court visitations with kids because it was sad. Here, I meet great people. The kids are wonderful. They call me Charlie. I want them to feel comfortable about coming to me if they have a problem, like a bullying problem.
When he is not greeting people and soothing children, Hubany devotes his time to sports. The Mets, the Jets, the Knicks and the Rangers. They havent won in years, but Im loyal to my teams," he said.
Well, actually we have our good years and our bad years. But mostly weve had bad years.
