North Salem Students Receive Rotary Scholarships

NORTH SALEM, N.Y. – Linda DosSantos and Peter Zembelletti, both of North Salem, Marissa Faretta of South Salem, and Kyle Winthers of Katonah have been awarded scholarships by the Northeast Westchester Rotary Club for their outstanding community service.

DosSantos, a 2012 North Salem High School graduate, will start her freshman year at New York University in the fall. She recently earned her Girl Scout Gold Award for organizing Pets for Vets, a program designed to match shelter dogs with returning veterans. She has also served the community as a peer tutor and a running coach at the elementary school, among other accomplishments.

Zembelletti, also a 2012 North Salem High School graduate, will be going to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in the fall, where he will study architecture. He is an Eagle Scout, played in the high school band, and was active as a volunteer in the North Salem Booster Club, the Ruth Keeler Library, and the Croton Falls Fire Department. Both he and DosSantos were elected to the National Honor Society.

Winthers, another Eagle Scout, has served on the Juniuor Corps of the Katonah Fire Department, the Bedford Hills Katonah Volunteer Ambulance Corps, the Katonah Library, St. Mary’s Church, the Presbyterian Church and the American Legion. He will study civil engineering in the fall at the University of Buffalo.

Faretta was an active volunteer with the South Salem Library, Norwalk Hospital, the American Diabetes Association, Juvenile Diabetes, Relay for Life and Reach Out John Jay. She is headed for Quinnipiac College, where she will study nursing.

Winthers and Faretta are both 2012 graduates of John Jay High School.

The Northeast Westchester Rotary awards its scholarships to students whose community spirit and service exemplifies the Rotary motto, “Service Above Self.” The total amount of the scholarships awarded this year comes to $6,000.
