NORTH SALEM, N.Y. -- For over 10 years the Ruth Keeler Memorial Library has annually exhibited a collection of artworks by students of the North Salem Middle School. This years exhibit opened with an artists reception on Tuesday.
All of the works on display were done in class, said art teacher Jan Malin.
The show represents accomplished artists and all kinds of art. Theres drawing, printmaking, acrylic painting, digital art, copper repousse. Theres art created from observation and art created from photographs. Observation is more difficult, Malin said.
Seventh grader Chloe DeLeo, 12 said that their assignment was to do a fantasy scene.
You take something unusual and put it in a modern landscape. I took a scene from Stew Leonards and put a dinosaur in it. I did Stew Leonards from memory because I used to live near there, DeLeo said.
Stephanie Blackwood, 12, is in Malins class and was assigned to make a design that was both symmetrical and asymmetrical.
I sketched ideas and picked the two best. Then I traced them onto a rubber block. It was like a stamp-making project. Its very graphic, Blackwood said.
Anna Hlushko, a 13-year-old eighth grader, created digital art.
We did a visual pun project in Mrs. Marinovics class. I did it in Photoshop. Its a Swedish fish and a Swedish flag. I found the images on Google and worked in layers. Swedish fish are red, the flag is blue and yellow. I made the flag transparent so you couldnt see the color. I did it in three or four classes, Hlushko said.
Among the eclectic artworks are two pen and ink hallway perspectives, a camel galloping through a room, the letter g transformed into a lions face, a couple of horse head portraits and Anais Baldis graphic collage based on the letters of her name.
The North Salem Middle School Art Exhibit will be on display until the end of March.
