“We believe strongly that we should let parents know ... in advance how days in excess of our allowance will be made up,” said Superintendent of Schools Ken Freeston.
New York state requires 180 days of school attendance, he explained. This breaks down to 176 days of classes and four professional development or superintendent conference days.
North Salem’s 2012-13 calendar provides for 183 days of classes, two superintendent conference days and three professional days. Because of the hurricane, Election Day originally designated as a professional development day, was converted to a class day this year.
As a result, the net number of lost class days came to five. Since the established 2012-13 calendar allows for seven snow days, the existing calendar is still in effect.
However, if it is an especially snowy winter and schools close for more than two additional days, it will be necessary to require attendance during one or more of the days set aside for spring recess. The days would be taken in the following order: March 25, 26, 27, 28 and 29.
