NORTH SALEM, N.Y. The North Salem Board of Education announced at its Monday meeting that Mary Kathryn Johnson has been chosen the new principal of Pequenakonck Elementary School, replacing Roberta Reiner, who served as principal for 14 years.
Johnson comes to North Salem after 12 years as assistant principal at Redding (Conn.) Elementary School and about eight years as principal of Stakley Rough Elementary School in Danbury (Conn.). She previously taught grades one and two.
Johnson starts Aug. 1. Her salary is $164,000 per year.
Johnson has a master's degree in teaching, curriculum and learning environments from Harvard University and currently is completing a doctorate's degree in educational leadership at Central Connecticut State University.
Im going for my doctorate because Im a learner, she explained. We should all be learning all the time."
Im very excited to come to North Salem, she said. I have great respect for the superintendent and for the district. Its a great opportunity to come to PQ. When a principal retires, its a very exciting time for the school. I cant wait to meet everyone.
When she is not working, studying, or involved in civic events, Johnson likes to garden and play golf. She has two yellow labs, Bogey and Mulligan. And when she has the time, she says, I love to cook with my husband.
