Pit Bull Terriers Attack Woman, Dog In North Salem

A woman and a dog were injured in a pit bull terrier attack recently at Vails Grove co-op, according to an incident report filed with the North Salem Police Department.

Around noon on Aug. 26, a woman was reportedly playing fetch with her two pit bull terriers at the residential complex on Peach Lake, police said.

At that time another woman was outside walking her dog on a leash past a park area, according to police. She reportedly asked the first woman if her dogs were friendly and the woman replied that they were, said police.

The woman with the small dog walked over to the other dogs to get acquainted at which time one female pit bull terrier reportedly attacked the small female terrier on the leash, according to police.

The owner of the small dog got in between the two pit bull terriers and her dog and covered her dog not to get bitten, at which time she got bitten on the back of her head during the dog fight, said police. 

Both dog owners tried to separate the dogs and screamed for help, police said.

A bystander who heard the screaming ran over yelling and stopped the attack, according to police.

A witness to the attack who does not want to be identified confirmed one of the dogs attacked the small dog and the other pit bull terriers attacked he woman when she tried to stop the first attack.

"I went over and started yelling and she was screaming. Her dog got away and ran away. She asked me if I saw where her dog went. The woman had a flap of skin loose and was holding the back of her head as she ran after to find her small dog," said the witness.

North Salem Police said Putnam Hospital filed a dog bite report with the Putnam County Health Department and the animal control officer was notified, said police, The owner of the pit bulls reportedly produced a rabies vaccination report for her dogs, the police report said.
