Damerau was born and raised in Palymyra, N.Y., to Theodore and Florence (Ashman). She earned a bachelor's degree in mathematics from Cornell University when she was 20, and a master's degree in linguistics from Yale University.
Damerau worked as a high-school math teacher for several years. She stayed active in her church in North Salem, where she played the organ, and was also active the larger community.
She lived the last 12 years in Goshen, Conn.
She was predeceased by her husband, Frederick J. Damerau.
She is survived by her son, Carl F. Damerau of Carbondale, Colo.; her daughter, Elaine (Damerau) Swanson and her husband Todd M. Swanson of Bethlehem, Conn.; two grandchildren Zachary T. Swanson and his wife Kimberly J. Swanson of Morris, Conn.; Olivia E. Swanson of Bethlehem, Conn.,; her sister, Beverly Young of Hannibal, N.Y. and her brother Eugene Deci of Suttons Bay, Mich.
