NORTH SALEM, N.Y. Cocktails and animals at the local museums are some of the events planned for the weekend.
Friday, May 4
First Friday at the Aldrich: 7 p.m. - 9 p.m. You dont have to be an art-lover to enjoy the Aldrich Museums monthly cocktail party and docent-led tour, but you probably will be by the end of the evening. There will be live music, cocktails and snacks and lots of good company. The fee is $10 for members, $15 for non-members. The Aldrich Museum is at 258 Main St., Ridgefield, CT. Photography Field Trip: The Northern Exposure Photography Club will take a field trip to The Cloisters in Upper Manhattan. For more information contact diehl3@optonline.net.
Blacksmith Workshop at Muscoot: 9 a.m. - 2 p.m. Professional farrier Bill Fitzgerald will demonstrate the various skills and techniques required in the art of blacksmithing. Spaces are limited and pre-registration is required. The fee is $85. The event takes place at Muscoot Farm on Route 100, 1½ miles south of Route 35 in Somers.
Black Gold: 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. Through the generosity of Deputy Town Supervisor Peter Kamenstein, local gardeners are invited to help themselves to composted Black Angus cow manure to get the season started. Bring your own containers. Empty and clean five-gallon paint containers are suggested. Hauling bags, pitch forks and assistance will be provided. A donation of $5 per five-gallon bucket would be appreciated. All proceeds go the the North Salem Improvement Society. For more information call Amy Post at (914) 217-5652. Quilt Show: 10 a.m. The Northern Star Quilters' Guild will host a quilt show at Kennedy Catholic High School on Route 138 in Somers. The show continues through Sunday, May 6. Click here for more information.
Ceramics for Children at The Hammond: 11 a.m. - 12 p.m. Children aged six to 12 will be taught to design, hand build and glaze a personalized vase and animal mug in this four-week course taught by ceramic artist, Vicky Youngman. The fee for museum members is $60, for non-members it is $80. The workshop will be held at The Hammond Museum, 28 Deveau Road, North Salem. Call (914) 669-5033 for further information.
Watercolors and Collages: 12 p.m. - 4 p.m. Putting It Together, works by artist Hope Friedland, will be on display in the main house at Muscoot Farm, Route 100, in Somers. There is no fee. The exhibit continues on Sunday.
Cinco de Mayo at a New Mexican Restaurant: If you want to treat yourself to a special Mexican meal in honor of the Mexican-American holiday celebrating Mexican heritage and pride, try the new Mexican restaurant, Las Mañanitas, on Route 22 in Brewster, just north of the county line.
Sunday, May 6
Old Salem Horse Show: 8 a.m. Its Welcome Horse Show Day at Old Salem Farm, a day of showing set aside for local riders. Competition classes for all age groups and several riding disciplines continue throughout the day. Its a prelude to the farms big horse show, starting Tuesday, May 7. Old Salem Farm is at 190 June Road, North Salem.
Basket-weaving Workshop: 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. JoAnn Kelly Catsos of the Westchester Area Basket-makers Guild will give instructions on making a black ash Diamond Twill Bureau Basket. Click Here to register. The workshop takes place at Muscoot Farm on Route 100, 1½ miles south of Route 35, Somers.
Spring Fungi: 1 p.m. Dianna Smith, president of the Connecticut-Westchester Mycological Association, will talk about the fungi of spring and their role in the environment. Join her afterwards for a guided walk through the woods to see what you can find. Meet in the Reception Center at Muscoot Farm, Route 100, Somers.
Blessing of the Animals: 3 p.m. This 47th annual springtime event at The Hammond Museum welcomes all pets to be blessed by a group of clergy representing various faiths. Pets must be leashed or crated. Admission is free but donations are welcome. It starts promptly at 3 p.m. in the Japanese Stroll Garden, rain or shine. The Hammond Museum is at 28 Deveau Road, North Salem.
