NORTH SALEM, N.Y. – As 2012 draws to a close, The North Salem Daily Voice is recapping some of the biggest stories of the past year.
When storms disabled North Salem in the early fall of 2011, it was considered extraordinary, but Mother Nature tried to surpass herself this year by sending Hurricane Sandy to town.
Almost everyone in town lost power, and many sought refuge at the Ambulance Corps Shelter and the town declared a State of Emergency.
Trains were halted, the Internet failed, driving was treacherous due to fallen trees and wires and many people waited nearly a week (or longer) to have their electricity restored.
Most devastating was the loss of two youngsters, Jack Baumler and Michael Robson, when a tree crashed through the roof of the Baumler’s Peach Lake home, killing both boys.
Hundreds attended the funerals. Later, a series of fundraisers was organized, with the goal of helping the families through their misfortunes.
