NORTH SALEM, N.Y. - The current gallery exhibit at the Schoolhouse Theater, Tis More Than Just Green, comprises roughly 50 photographs of Ireland taken by a dozen artists and ranging from the whimsical to the heart-wrenching. Subjects include pubs, street scenes, buildings, bogs, vast landscapes, rural settings, religious icons and faces, all adding up to an intimate retrospective of the country and its people.
Bob Pliskins photos of the Irish landscape are accompanied by his brief essay explaining the geological history of the island. The photographs are beautiful, but the essay makes them even more significant.
Patrick Cicalos work has a painterly quality, riding the fine line between photographic art and canvas art.
Especially stirring are Lester McGuires austere black and white photos of Kilmainham Gaol, in use as a prison from 1796 to 1924, and described by the artist as an institution intimately linked with the story of Irish nationalism.
In a cozier mood there are the geranium-filled window boxes and teapot arrangements by Linda Hatfield, the amusing golfer by Claire Fishman and the variety of dogs Larry Katzman encountered along the way.
The exhibit is presented in conjunction with the theaters reprise of Dancing At Lughnasa by Irish playwright, Brian Friel, and will be on display until the end of October.
Almost all pictures are for sale, with most prices ranging from $100 to $250. The gallery is open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday, evenings during theater performances and by appointment. 914-277-8477.
