NORTH SALEM, N.Y. Local library patrons are in for a couple of treats.
Six Barnes & Noble Nooks, cited by CNET as "the best e-ink reader," will be available for borrowing Monday. The NOOKS will be preloaded with classic, contemporary fiction and non-fiction selections.
A few other libraries are doing it and it seems to be popular, Library Director Carolyn Reznick said. People can use them at home or take them on vacation.
The eBooks are provided through Overdrive, a leading distributor of eBooks and audiobooks for libraries, schools and retailers.
Wed like to get input about it from our patrons, Reznick added.
Free downloadable eBooks and audios are already available on the library website. Tyler Scherer is available at the library every Saturday from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. for those who need help downloading. He can also be emailed questions at keelerlibrary@wlsmail.org
While patrons are at home or on vacation enjoying their summer reading, the library staff is busy weeding out obsolete material and rearranging the physical setting as well. The Childrens Room and the main Adult Room will remain basically the same however the transitional space, now used to house videos and audio tapes, will be converted to a Teen Room. The area will be divided by a bookcase, allowing shelving on one side and a sitting area on the other.
The library is eliminating its video collection and its audio cassette collection and will concentrate on CDs and DVDs.
All libraries do this, said Reznick. We have a finite amount of space, so were shifting our collection priorities. Technology is accelerating, so the library becomes a work in progress. Many encyclopedias and other references are available online these days so we dont need to keep them on the shelves.
One Dewey decimal classification that will remain on the shelves, however, is Local History. The North Salem collection has been moved to a new space, but is available to all.
Those who graduated from North Salem High School may want to stop by and look at the old yearbooks and, perhaps, ponder on how times like the library - have changed.
