Protestors Drop By Croton Falls Republican Meeting

CROTON FALLS, N.Y. -- A handful of protestors gathered in front of Primavera Restaurant on Friday morning, where a meeting of Republican County Chairs and elected officials from Putnam, Westchester and Duchess Counties was taking place inside.

The protestors were demanding a Republican primary election for the State Senate candidacy in the 40th District. New York State Assembly member Steve Katz has said that he may choose to challenge Sen. Greg Ball’s incumbent position.

“We think there should be a primary,” Cornelia Mrose said. “The great advantage of American democracy is that the voter can vote on the candidate in a primary. I’m from Germany. There, the candidate is chosen by the establishment and it’s often someone who would not have been chosen by the people.”

Gene Tullio of Somers added that the United States constitution says “for and by the people.”

“The primary gives the voters a chance to vet the issues,” Tullio said.

Inside the restaurant, Ball was conducting a breakfast meeting with state, county and local Republican officials to discuss the upcoming campaign, according Ball’s Chief of Staff Jim Coleman.

“The purpose was to offer his support and take questions,” Coleman said. “It was a regular meeting of leaders of the party.”
