Police Alert: Hoax E-Mail

The New York State Police are investigating a spam e-mail, primarily sent through Yahoo e-mail services. It purports to be a traffic ticket from the Department of Motor Vehicles.

The e-mail contains an attached zip file, believed to contain an unknown virus. The file allegedly contains a copy of the traffic ticket.

The subject line may contain the title "Uniform Traffic Ticket."

If you receive the e-mail, do not open the attachment.

There is no need to inform the police that you have received it.

The NYS Police remind everyone to take basic safeguards, such as:

Protect your personal information with anti-virus software, firewalls and other security measures.

Only open e-mails from familiar addresses or ones you trust.

Change your password every 90 days.

Do not allow your computer to store passwords.

Back up important information to outside sources.

Be cautious when downloading from the Internet.

Use parental control software to monitor your children's computer use.

Establish family guidelines for using the computer appropriately.
