NORTH SALEM, N.Y. North Salem police warn of a scam involving FedEx deliveries. Pound Ridge, Norwalk and Darien have all experienced recent delivery frauds. Police say the scam may involve a stranger posing as a resident, waiting to accept a fraudulently ordered delivery. It may also involve people posing as delivery agents. Three arrests have been made in Norwalk, and the investigation continues. If something suspicious occurs, police urge you to call 911 to report it.
Deceptive Delivery: A purported FedEx deliveryman rang the bell of a Surrey Lane resident on May 2 and asked if she would accept delivery for a neighbor. The woman called the police and reported that the package did not seem to be from FedEx and she had refused to accept it. The deliveryman, described as about 30 years old and wearing a bleached or faded FedEx shirt, returned to the passenger seat of a waiting white car, which drove away. Investigation revealed that the neighbor was not expecting a package, nor had FedEx sent any package to the address.
Vandalism: Someone damaged one of the canopies covering the gasoline pumps at the Croton Falls Gas Mart Shell station last week, causing damage in excess of $1,000. Surveillance cameras at the station were not aimed in the direction of the canopies.
Baseball Injury: A Deer Court resident was hit in the eye by a baseball Saturday evening and was transported by the North Salem Volunteer Ambulance Corps for treatment at the Northern Westchester Hospital Center.
Suspicious Incident: A Hawley Road resident drove away from home Thursday but returned within a couple of minutes to discover a strange man standing on her doorstep. The man said he was looking for a construction job and had been advised by a friend to go to that address. The woman, whose husband is a lawyer, gave the man her husbands business number and the man walked away. When police received the report, Officer Ralph Argiento caught up with the man, whom he then transported to a gas station on Route 6 in Brewster, where a friend of the man picked him up.
Contractor Complaint: A Juengstville Road resident who signed a $40,000 contract for home renovations and had already paid about $20,000 reported that the work done so far was unacceptable, with many deficiencies. Attempts to rectify the situation with the contractor have been unproductive. Sgt. Andrew Brown advised the resident that the situation was a civil matter and suggested that she contact a legal adviser.
