NORTH SALEM, N.Y. -- North Salem officials discussed drug-related activities in the Purdys hamlet at a Lions Club meeting earlier this week.

On Monday evening, Supervisor Warren Lucas, Town Board member Peter Kamenstein, Building Inspector Bruce Thompson, Police Chief Thomas Howley, Sgt. Andrew Brown and state police criminal investigator Joseph Becerra met at the Lions Club with a large contingent of Purdys residents.

In an informal question-and-answer session, residents expressed concern about drug-related activities that had been occurring in Purdys. Howley and Becerra reassured residents they were employing their resources to address this important issue. The residents were urged to immediately report any suspicious activities to police.

There also was concern about drivers using the hamlet for a shortcut and disobeying the speed limit. Lucas suggested a separate meeting to discuss this problem, at which Ward Hanaburgh, town highway superintendent, would be invited to participate.

It was generally agreed that occasional meetings of this sort would make sense going forward.

On Tuesday evening, the Town Board formalized an agreement for the Conservation Advisory Council to work with the building inspector to help monitor easements granted to the town.
