NORTH SALEM, N.Y. - You probably think you are lucky to live in North Salem, but Michael Gleason is even luckier. The North Salem resident just won $10,000 in the New York State Lottery. Gleason bought a Mega Millions ticket for $1 at the Hannaford Market on Route 6 in Carmel. His numbers were drawn on July 8.
Kina and Jess, who work at Customer Service at Hannafords, said the news was news to them. Jess said, Ive only been here a few months and the most Ive seen anyone win was $4,000. Thats a lot of money.
She added, Were open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. and we sell lottery tickets non-stop.
Mega Millions is America's largest multi-state jackpot game with jackpots starting at $12 million. Other prizes ranging from $2 to $250,000.
The first drawing took place in 1996 and was called The Big Game. Six states participated. The name changed to Mega Millions in 2002. There are now 41 states participating, along with Washington, D.C. and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
About 35% of ticket sales support government services in the member state. About 50% of each ticket sold goes back to the players in prize money. Another 15% is set aside for retailer commissions and other operatinng costs. These figures vary from state to state.
