North Salem Kids Go to Camp

We waited a long time for it -- and now all of a sudden summer is two weeks away. There is still time to make plans for hot weather activities. Here are some day camp suggestions:

There’s No Place Like Home

North Salem’s own Mountain Lakes Park will have its usual camp program, with activities including music, karate, canoeing, outdoor cooking, arts and crafts and swimming at the pool or from the beach amid the towering pines.

North Salem folks who went there themselves, whose fathers or mothers went there and -- can it be? -- even your grandparents? -- might like to keep up the family tradition.

Dates: June 28 - July 29, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Fees: North Salem residents: $610 per camper

Giddyap!

No experience necessary! At Summit Farm campers of varied skills will learn to groom, tack, and do many of the basic chores involved in barn management. A one-hour group riding lesson per day is supplemented by games, arts and crafts and water activities.

Fees: One week $375, two weeks $675, extended day: add $150 per week

En Pointe!

Got a kid who’s “gotta dance?” North Salem’s prestigious Caleco Ballet Studio is offering a summer dance camp. The highly experienced staff teaches the Balanchine Technique and Style. In addition to lessons in classical ballet and choreography, campers will work with props and costumes and relevant arts and crafts.

Dates: Two-day sessions: July 5 and 7, July 12 and 14, July 19 and 21, times vary

Fees: $45-$50 for a single week, $135-$150 for three weeks

Chill Out!

Want to be cool in more ways than one? The Brewster Ice Arena has a summer program for skaters of all abilities, as well as special camps for hockey and figure-skating enthusiasts. The Arena’s expert staff will be on hand for professional guidance. Each week will culminate with an ice show featuring all campers.

Dates: June 27 - September 2; Half-day sessions: 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., full-day sessions: 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.; Sign up per day, for three days, for a week or for multiple weeks.

Fees: Approximately $385 per full-day week, $235 half-day week, $85 one full day, $55 one half-day, sibling and multiple week discounts. 

Adventure Awaits...

The programs at Brewster’s Green Chimneys are always extremely popular, and this includes their Hillside Day Camp. Kids are divided according to interest and ages. Activities can include hiking, canoeing, rock climbing, swimming, arts and crafts, music and various sports. The Green Chimneys staff is usually made up of carefully screened college students or graduates. They often come from an international background.
