NORTH SALEM, N.Y. Police received a report Thursday morning of a suspicious person hanging around the Croton Falls business district and the Metro North Train Station. Officer Silvio Ruvolo located the man, who identified himself with a New York State Benefits card and said he lives in a shelter in Brooklyn. He also produced a return train ticket.
A records check identified the man as a Registered Sex Offender, convicted in 2007 for assaulting his sister in Brooklyn, police said. There were no current outstanding warrants for the man, who explained to Ruvolo that he had come to the area to visit a girlfriend in Mahopac, but he was not allowed into her residence because her family disapproved of the relationship. He had been planning to take an evening train to the city, but boarded a southbound train at 10:25 a.m. instead.
Police did not identify the man.
Disorderly Conduct: A resident in the vicinity of Bloomer Road telephoned police on April 9 to complain that he frequently sees one or more people from the Salem Golf Course relieving themselves publicly near his property. He said he has reported it to the clubs manager several times but the action persists. Police Chief Thomas Howley discussed the problem with the complainant and advised him how to proceed.
Suspicious Incident: When a resident of Lakeside Drive noticed two men leaving his neighbors house on April 10 carrying two large bags, he notified police. The man said his neighbor was homebound and it seemed suspicious. Officer Michael Castellano investigated along with Investigator Cornelius Merritt of the New York State Police. The homebound man explained that he normally has a live-in caregiver provided by the Visiting Nurse Service. The two men who left that morning were a substitute caregiver and his cab driver. Police said nothing was missing or disturbed.
DWI in Southeast: New York State Troopers charged Joseph T. Cuneo, 67, of North Salem with driving while intoxicated, a misdemeanor, after a traffic stop on Interstate 84. The incident occurred about 10:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 10. Cuneo was released on an appearance ticket.
