Mail Delivered Thanks to DeGrazia

NORTH SALEM, N.Y. - If Sue DeGrazia looks familiar to you, it is because she handles your mail on a regular basis. DeGrazia is a PTF, that is, a “part-time-flex,” which means she pitches in at the Post Office wherever she is needed. Therefore, she has on occasion delivered the mail to every single house in North Salem.

DeGrazia loves the job because, “I like to meet people and chit-chat. People are so nice. A lot of people wave to you. One customer gives me eggs. It makes you feel important.” One of her favorite parts of town is Salem Chase. “They have a ton of kids there.” But, she adds, “there are no bad neighborhoods in North Salem.

“There are lake houses and farm houses, and houses with columns. Many different types of homes and every one is beautiful but in a different way. I grew up in Thornwood -- all ranch houses.”

DeGrazia considers herself lucky to live “right on Peach Lake. We have the best view. It’s a very calming feeling to hear the water. I love going out and listening to things on the water, too. When friends come to visit my kids, they come in a boat. My daughter, Kacy, takes the kayak across the lake to Bloomer to see her friend.”

The disadvantage to living right on the lake is the chill and wind of winter. But on the other hand, when the lake freezes there is skating and people take their quads and snowmobiles right out on the lake.

DeGrazia’s son, Josh, added, “Fishing on the lake is awesome. We get small and large mouth bass, pickerel and crappies. But we let them go.” Why? “The next year they’re even bigger.”

Does the postwoman ever come across interesting mail as she makes her rounds? “I never look at the mail,” she said. “It’s none of my business.”
