Vendors came from near and far to participate in the third annual Croton Falls Street Fair on Sunday. The fair was organized by the Croton Falls Fire Departments Ladies Auxiliary. The proceeds will go to the fire department.
We have several functions a year, explained Kathy Magnuson, treasurer of the Auxiliary. They change from year to year but we always do a bake sale, an Easter basket raffle, and a Penny Social every October in the firehouse.
The first year we didnt make any money at the fair, she said. Last year we made about $200. Were hoping to do better this year.
Mother Nature sent Croton Falls a gray and rather damp day, but vendors and fairgoers alike streamed out to enjoy it all. Among the local businesses represented were North Salems Country Farmer, the garden and fresh food center at the corner of Route 121 and Bloomer Road, and Snow Hill Farm, purveyors of grass-fed all-natural beef. The North Salem Lions Club provided free eye-screening for children ages one to five.
Magnuson, who lives right in the heart of the hamlet, is a lifelong resident of Croton Falls. It used to be a quiet little town. Now we have more of a crowd, with lots of commuters. We need to bring people together. Thats why we have the fair.
She said she has been working with the Ladies Auxiliary forever. The youngest member these days is Megan deLeon, 16. Magnuson was pondering on who the oldest member might be when her daughter, Rebecca Piccini, suggested, Grandma!
Grandma is Isabelle Adams, 88, who has been with the Auxiliary for 54 years. As for Piccini, she has been accompanying her mom to the Ladies Auxiliary and doing stuff since I could walk.
