Jazz Jumps at North Salem's Schoolhouse

Drummer/teacher Bob Meyer is coming to Croton Falls on Monday night. “The Bob Meyer Project” will be the first of a series of Monday night jazz evenings at the Schoolhouse Theater.

“Traditionally the Schoolhouse Theater was a 'theater theater,'” Meyer told The Daily North Salem. “Now they’re branching out and trying to expand their base.”

Improvisational jazz “usually emphasizes individual performances,” Meyer said. “We do that too, but we’re more interested in group ‘improv.’ That’s what sets us apart from more traditional modern jazz groups. It's jazz with some elements of chamber music.”

Meyer, who has performed and taught both locally and internationally, described his group’s numbers as “original compositions and jazz standards with a twist.”

The group has a wide age range. Meyer is in his 60s while sax-player Steven Frieder is just 20. Luke Franco on guitar and Motoki Mihara on bass are both in their 30s.

The show starts at 7:30 p.m. and will end about 10:30 p.m. Tickets are $10.  “It’s kid-friendly,” Meyer added.
