How to Prepare for the Next Inevitable Emergency

NORTH SALEM, N.Y. - The unexpected crises of the past few months have drawn attention to the general need for better preparation. Supervisor Warren Lucas advises that all residents be registered with the Office of Emergency Management (OEM). It is a simple matter of filling out a form, available from Town Clerk Veronica Howley at Town Hall or on the Internet. The form can be filled out on line.

Referring to the latest emergencies, Lucas adds, “If your phone was working but you did not get a phone message or email messages, we need to know that. We have to go to our phone call-out system and add your number. Some longtime residents did not get calls last time around.”

The Volunteer Ambulance Corps building at 19 Daniel Road will continue to be the town shelter in future emergencies. Cots, pillows and blankets will be provided. Food and showers will also be available there, as well as WiFi. 

NYSEG is committed to providing dry ice, which the town will distribute at the Daniel Road address. Water will also be available. Bring your own containers.

Here are some more suggestions for an emergency checklist:

Keep a three-day supply of water (one gallon per person per day), a three-day supply of canned food, a hand-operated can opener, a flashlight with extra batteries, a battery powered radio plus extra batteries, a first-aid kit, a seven-day supply of medications and medical supplies, pet supplies, and emergency contact information.

In addition, put together a “Go-Bag” and do it today! It should include important papers, extra house and car keys, a checkbook, credit and ATM cards and cash, two changes of clothing and personal items such as books, games or toys.

To keep your food from spoiling, do not open refrigerator and freezer doors, get dry ice, and if there is snow outside, use it to chill food in coolers. Snow and ice can be melted to supply water.

Residents should not leave home during a storm. Wait until the weather has cleared. In case assistance such as ambulance, firefighters or police is needed, dial 911.
