SOMERS, N. Y. - It was about 2 p.m. on Tuesday. Howard Goodman was home at 306B, Condo 11, Heritage Hills, when there was a loud knock at the door. A woman walking past happened to glance up and saw heavy smoke emanating from the roof of Unit 306D. Together they called 911.
Response was very rapid. The fire departments of Somers, Goldens Bridge, Croton Falls and Bedford Hills were there within minutes. The Somers Emergency Medical Service, the Somers Ambulance Corps and the Yorktown Fast Team also arrived.
Mr. Goodman explained, The smoke was definitely coming from 306D, Mrs. Kings house. Then it moved across the roof to 306C. That unit is empty. Theyre doing renovations. And Mrs. King wasnt home.
Our power went off on Sunday morning and came on again around one oclock today. I think what happened was that Mrs. King had something on the stove that shed forgotten about.
Another neighbor, Bruce Carrick, said he saw smoke coming from the roof, but nobody saw flames.
Somers Assistant Fire Chief Ray Baker described the incident as, a kitchen fire, which was contained to the unit of origin. No one was home. There was only smoke damage. We checked the surrounding units, but everything was secure. The fire was extinguished. No one was injured.
