SOMERS, N.Y. -- You could not ask for a more beautiful evening than the one Mother Nature bestowed upon Saturday's concert at Lasdon Park. It was the first in a series of four summer concerts on the lawn featuring the Ridgefield Symphony Orchestra.
The gates opened at 5 p.m. and people arrived promptly, toting along tables, chairs, picnic baskets, wine glasses -- even table linens. Golf carts were available to help people establish themselves. While most picnickers seemed to gather in a congenial group, others chose to go farther afield and settle down under a tree or on a grassy knoll. Children frolicked while grownups wined, dined and relaxed.
The concert began at 6 p.m. and concluded at 8 p.m. The program included Mozart's Magic Flute Overture, Haydn's Notturno in C Major and Beethoven's Pastoral Symphony.
Beth and Warren Bromberg, of Armonk, were dining with friends, Karen and Craig Samson. "I've been doing this for about 20 years," said Warren. "It's a beautiful night and good music. This is what Westchester is all about."
Chris and Margaret Jones had come from Ossining with their guests, John and LouAnn Mylott, visiting from Lancaster, Penn. They were enjoying gazpacho with cheese and crackers, Margaret's special pasta with shrimp, snap peas and sesame sauce, and a tossed salad.
The Lasdon Park and Arboretum was originally the summer home of William Lasdon, a pharmaceutical executive and philanthropist. Westchester County acquired the property in 1986 as part of the county's efforts to preserve open spaces. That same year, "The Secret of My Success," starring Michael J. Fox, was filmed there.
Next week's concert at Lasdon is entitled "Wind Serenade," and will include Mozart's Overture to the Marriage of Figaro, Gounod's Petite Simphonie and Mozart's Gran Partita. Tickets are on sale at the gate. The charge is $17 for adults, $12 for seniors, and $7 for children 5-12. Children under 5 are free.
AccuWeather.com predicts a warm and sunny day for next Saturday, with a high of 84 degrees and a low of 63 degrees. No precipitation expected. So pack up the picnic basket, load up the car, and go out for a splendid evening lit by the setting sun.
