NORTH SALEM, N.Y. - The Daily North Salem has published hundreds of local stories since our site launched June 1. Here are just a few of the big ones:
July 12 - Equestrians discovered a decomposing male body in the Gaymark Nature Preserve off Dingle Ridge Road. The body was later identified through fingerprints as Epifanio Medina, 65, from Passaic, NJ.
June 15 - The Covino family officially settled in the farm stand area of the former Outhouse Orchards. The name was changed to Harvest Moon Farm and Orchard.
Other business changes included the closing of John-Michaels at Purdys Homestead, scheduled to re-open in the spring of 2012 as Purdys Farmer & the Fish, and the Blackboard Bistro, now re-opened under the same management as the American Burger Mac and Cheese Company, a family restaurant, with all items under $10.
Aug. 28 - Tropical Storm Irene roared into town, wrecking gardens, pummeling roofs and leaving thousands without power, some for nearly a week.
Sept. 11 - The 10th Anniversary of 9/11 was observed at the Titicus Road fire house. Special honor was given to local resident, Lt. Vincent Halloran, a New York City firefighter killed while leading his men in the evacuation of the North Tower.
Oct. 30 - A freak snow storm hit the town, destroying power connections, closing schools and spoiling Trick-or-Treating for neighborhood kids.
Nov. 8 - A close election between candidates for Town Council was eventually finalized proving the winners were Amy Rosmarin (D, I, Ind) and Bruce Buchholtz (R, C, Ind). In a three-way race for Town Justice, incumbents John Johnson and Ralph Mackin were re-elected, as were Supervisor Warren Lucas and Town Clerk Veronica Howley, who ran unopposed.
