An alleged puppy mill was busted over the weekend after a person who adopted a dog tipped off officials that the puppies were kept in horrible conditions.

The Hudson Valley SPCA Law Enforcement, along with state police, raided a Pine Bush home with a warrant following a months-long investigation into the suspected puppy mill, according to Gene Hecht, the SPCA’s humane law enforcement officer.

When police arrived at the trailer home, they found  Iren Ehrhardt, 70, had 26 dogs and puppies in the 10-foot by 60-foot trailer, Hecht said.

Officials said the dogs were in small cages with urine and feces all around them.

Hecht said the SPCA was tipped off by a person who bought a dog from Ehrhardt who almost died.

Ehrhardt, who is not a licensed animal breeder, allegedly did not provide any shots or veterinary care. Some of the puppies were said to weight as little as two pounds.

One of the dogs died over the weekend, officials said.

Ehrhardt was charged with 28 counts of animal cruelty and was hospitalized for mental evaluation.

She is scheduled to appear in Town of Crawford Court on March 4.

The dogs were taken to the SPCA’s shelter in New Windsor.
