Have you noticed that you are seeing more and more cars with Christmas trees tied to their roofs? Nancy Dugan, vice president of the Somers Fire Department, said sales seem to be booming. We started with 1,200 trees about two weeks ago. We have 144 left. We get a lot of repeat customers year after year.
The Somers Fire Department has been selling trees at Firemans Field for nearly 20 years. The funds raised are divided between the four fire houses. William Keating, who was helping out on Sunday, described the trees. Balsams are the classic, he said. Theyre the old-fashioned standard. Theyre more fragrant than the others and they have softer needles. The 10-footers sell out the first week.
The department also has Fraser Firs and Canaan trees, Keating added. It is a relative newcomer, a little lighter with a thinner trunk, and more fragrant, like a balsam.
Frank Caltabellotta was tree shopping at Firemans Field because we want to support Somers give back to the community. He planned to set the tree up on Sunday and the family would decorate it on Monday. His 20-year-old daughter, Sabrina, described her favorite ornament. I got it when I was a baby. You plug it in and it lights up. Its a rocking chair. Her 16-year-old sister, Daniella, favors the one she made in pre-school. Its macaroni.
At North Salems Harvest Moon Farm, the only type of tree available is the Fraser Fir. The most popular size is the 7-8 footer. The Browne family described its favorite ornaments. Dana, 17, said, The Dalmatian I had when I was a baby, and Katrina, 15, said, My angel is my favorite. Its really pretty even though its broken.
Their mother, Lori, explained, Last year our cats knocked the tree down. I was in the kitchen and suddenly everything crashed.
