NORTH SALEM, N.Y. - It has been said that North Salem has more horses than households. Perhaps it is not quite true, but surely there are as many horse-lovers and nearly as many horse-riders as there are households. 

If you fall among the majority, you may be interested in one of the following possibilities:

Stalls Available at Family Owned Horse Farm

A unique and peaceful farm in a secluded setting offers roomy, clean, matted window stalls with all day grassy turnout and run-in sheds. There is a large, lighted outdoor arena, a round pen and easy access to the North Salem bridle trails. The barn has a hot water wash stall. Trainers are welcome as well as riders of all disciplines. Full Board with a Cover-All Ring

12 x 12 window stalls are available, along with a riding field, adjacent hills for exercise and miles of North Salem bridle trails. The covered outdoor ring enjoys a greenhouse effect. That is, it is warm, with no distracting roof noise. Included are all day turnout in a grassy paddock and night check with hay and carrots. The owner lives on the property. Trainers are welcome and lessons are available. Call 914-485-1204.

Boutique Style Barn Has One Stall Available

This farm describes itself as the best kept secret in North Salem. All disciplines are welcome, but there is only one stall available at a stable with top facilities and the best of care. Call 917-921-0884.

Horse for Lease

The owner of a nine-year-old 15.1 Welsh Cross gelding wants someone to lease him two days a week. He is described as quiet, sweet, fancy and special, suitable for a child or a small adult. He must be kept at his home barn on Baxter Road, which boasts of hundreds of acres of riding trails and indoor and outdoor rings. Call 914-276-7409.

Part-time Groom Wanted

A local horse owner needs a part time groom to work Saturdays from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., or from 12 noon to 5 p.m. The applicant must be experienced in mucking, grooming and tacking up. Call 917-927-0884.

Physical Therapy for Riders

Thomas Lemens at North Salem’s Center for Applied Posture is a Board Certified trainer and teacher of The Alexander Technique. One of his special techniques is  assisting riders to establish ideal balance and posture, both on horseback and off. For more information call 914-485-1288. 

Olympian Suffers Accident

Two-time Olympic gold medal winner McLain Ward suffered a fractured kneecap in a riding accident several days ago but is expected to recover by May. The Ward family is well-known in the local riding circuit.
