NORTH SALEM, N.Y. -- Six North Salem Girl Scouts from Cadette Troop 2949 recently received the Silver Award, the highest and most prestigious achievement attainable as a Cadette Girl Scout.

Rebecca Davidoff, Samantha Freedman and Amanda Santos received the award for their project entitled Helping the Hungry and the Homeless.

The three organized food drives, collected excess produce from farms and delivered it to the needy. They also volunteered with various local organizations catering to the needs of underserved community members.

Kiera McCarthy, Julia Padolf and Simone Schnarwiler received the award for organizing Project Pen Pal. The girls established pen pal programs between young children and soldiers as well as senior citizens, another program between Peer Leaders at North Salem High School and students at Pequenakonck Elementary School, and fundraisers to pay for postage and supplies.

The award ceremony was held at Monroe-Woodbury High School in Central Valley.

More than 300 Girl Scouts Heart of the Hudson Silver Award recipients from Yonkers to Saugerties were in attendance.

The Silver Award recipients were urged to "reach for the stars" as they prepare to pursue Gold Awards in the coming years.

"I am so proud of these girls and their achievements, and I'm so excited and to watch their future successes, especially their Gold Awards," Troop 2949 Leader Dawn McCarthy said in a statement.
