NORTH SALEM, N.Y. The intersection of June and Titicus Roads will be bustling all weekend with activity at and around North Salem's St. James Episcopal Church.
The North Salem Nursery School is holding its annual fundraiser, the Spring Fling, on Friday from 7 to 9:30 p.m., featuring cocktails, hors doeuvres, a silent auction and lots of good company. Many local families have come and gone through the North Salem Nursery School. But the school is not bringing in enough money right now, said Roe Intrieri. "Wed like to keep the lights on.
Your appetite will get a workout again on Saturday as St. James Church holds its Third Annual Chili Cook-Off from 6 to about 9 p.m. A total of 11 ambitious amateur chefs are donating their own chili concoctions, and for the price of $20 for adults and $10 for children, you will get a tray with a taste of each dish and a chance to rate them. Eric Pooley, who walked away with last years first prize, will provide the music. Last years second place finisher, Bruce Buchholtz, is promising to outdo Pooley this year but you be the judge.
Kids will be consumed in a pie-eating contest. Every entrant gets a chocolate pudding and whipped cream pie. The first to finish the entire pie wins. No hands allowed.
The activities wind up at 4 p.m. Sunday with a recital by St. James organist Mike Mulder in a show called Bratwurst and Bonbons. The bratwurst represents the works of German composers Bach and Brahms, and the bonbons are the French composers of Gigout, Franck and Langlais. Between pieces, Mulder will comment on the composers and tell the history of organ building. The suggested donation is $20 for adults, $10 for children. Proceeds benefit the St. James Outreach program. A reception will follow.
