North Salem’s Jordan Initiates Mudd Day Races

NORTH SALEM, N.Y. – Thanks to North Salem’s Chris Jordan, the first annual Mudd Day Run is coming up, so this might be a good time to shape up for summer, raise awareness and funds for a good cause, and have some fun all at the same time.

The beneficiary of the Mudd Day Run is the United States Association of Blind Athletes (USABA). Research has shown that participation in organized sports doubles a blind person’s opportunities for employment. Organized sports build character, teach discipline and promote camaraderie and self-confidence for everyone, said Jordan, “but it’s particularly significant to children who are visually impaired.”

Jordan’s 15-year-old daughter, Lexie, is legally blind, yet she is an expert skier with hopes of competing in the Paralympics. “I feel so lucky that my daughter had that chance [to participate in a sport] and at the same time I feel so bad that kids all over the country aren’t getting the same opportunity,” Jordan said.

“[The USABA] is trying to bring more opportunities to kids so they have the chance to maximize their potential.”

The Mudd Day Run will take place on Sunday, June 9 at the nearby Thunder Ridge Ski Area, 50 Thunder Ridge Road (just off Route 22) in Patterson. It begins at 10 a.m. There will be one-mile, two-mile and three-mile obstacle courses, plus live entertainment, plus food and beverages and beer available for purchase after the event. There are awards for the Best Costumes, as well.

The entry fees are $45 for adults, $35 for 13-18-year olds, and $20 for 6-12-year olds. Everyone will receive a commemorative Mudd Run t-shirt.

If you would rather sit it out, sponsorship opportunities are available ranging from $300 to $2,500. All proceeds will benefit the USABA.

The event is on, rain or shine. Please note: No coolers or outside beverages will be permitted. For more information or to register, go to the website.
