The local charity supports families in the tristate region that have a child who is suffering from cancer or other life-threatening illness.

Holtzer first learned of Friends of Karen in North Salem in 2004, when she visited the nonprofit's headquarters.

Recalling an "absolute eye-opener," she got involved serving on a few committees, according to Friends of Karen.

Social workers, child life specialists, arts therapists and others provide free emotional, financial and practical support to families whose child is undergoing treatment.

Holtzer said she likes the holistic approach Friends of Karen takes toward helping a family, from several months to many years

“When you hear that somebody has a child with cancer, you know it’s devastating, but you don’t really understand all the details of what goes on for that family,” she said. “What Friends of Karen does is to guide each member of the family all the way through a harrowing crisis. That’s life-changing."

Pamela Hervey, the president of Friends of Karen's board of directors, said Holtzer has a talent for thinking outside the box.
