NORTH SALEM, N.Y. -- Westchester families with children fighting life-threatening diseases are getting a lot more support thanks to Friends of Karen's recent benefit at Mamaroneck's Beach & Yacht Club.

The charity benefit on June 14 helped raise more than $340,000 for families in Westchester, with contributions coming from members and honorees from Somers, Yorktown Heights, North Salem, Armonk, Briarcliff Manor, Chappaqua, Larchmont, Yonkers, Katonah and Pound Ridge. Rye Brook native and NBC correspondent Kate Snow emceed the 35th anniversary fund-raiser, according to a news release.

“Friends of Karen is a lifeline for families caring for a child with a life-threatening illness,” said Snow in the release. “I am honored to be part of such an amazing organization, a resource like no other.”

The evening honored longtime Friends of Karen board member Palma Patti, of Chappaqua, with the Sheila W. Petersen Award. Patti described Friends of Karen as “an extraordinary community of kindness and hope," according to the release.

"It is an inspirational privilege to be associated with you,” Patti said in the release.  Proceeds from the gala will benefit the hundreds of children battling cancer and other life-threatening illnesses in the tri-state area, according to the release.

“Friends of Karen started with one child, Karen, and her family,”  Judith Factor, the charity’s executive director, said in the release. “Since then, we’ve touched the lives of more than 12,400 children. That’s something to celebrate.”

Friends of Karen is a nonprofit charity which recently moved its headquarters from Purdys to North Salem.
