SOMERS, N.Y. - Congresswoman Nan Hayworth (R), who co-sponsored a bill that would allow tax deductions for conservation easements, will be the honored guest at Somers Angle Fly Preserve Vounteer Day on Saturday. The work day begins at 10 a.m. and ends in mid-afternoon.
Hayworth will be taken on a tour of the 654-acre property, to demonstrate appreciation of her support and to display some of the progress that has already been made at the site. A variety of trail-related projects will be underway during the visit.
Development of the Angle Fly Preserve has been largely in the hands of selfless volunteers. Plans include hiking trails, nature observatory sites, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing and hunting opportunities.
Since the official opening of the first trail in 2008, the Somers Land Trust has completed a management plan, sponsored a forest management plan and developed a number of environmental initiatives. The Trust is in the process of completing 10 miles of trails and has plans for comfort stations, kiosks and other facilities.
Everyone is invited to participate in Saturdays volunteer event. All levels of skill are welcome. The meeting point is at the entrance to the Preserve on Route 139, between Plumbrook Road and Route 100 in Somers.
Wear sturdy boots, bring work gloves and dress for the weather and a possible encounter with ticks. Bring along loppers, clippers, handsaws and other trail-building tools. Bring water, snacks and sunscreen as well.
