NORTH SALEM, N.Y. Everybody is invited to North Salems annual Memorial Day Parade on Monday, May 28, beginning at 10 a.m.
Leading the parade will be Herb Geller, Commander of the North Salem American Legion Post, followed by the Color Guard and local veterans. The North Salem High School band will follow behind North Salems town officials. Local clergy will come next, setting the pace for three antique cars, driven by their owners, Norm Hathaway, Francis Tuoti and Thomas Leonard; and Anthony Ferry, driving a vehicle described as a special car.
Then come the Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Cub Scouts and Brownies, the American Youth Soccer Organization, the Mid-Hudson Soccer League, the North Salem Baseball League, the 4H Club, and the North Salem Improvement Society. The North Salem Fire Brigade and the North Salem Ambulance Corps will bring up the rear.
The North Salem Lions encourage young people to ride or walk their bicycles in the parade. Prizes will be awarded after the ceremony for the best decorated bikes, including Most Patriotic, Best Sports Theme and Most Uniquely Decorated.
After all of these participants, it may seem as though there will be no one left to stand on the sidelines and cheer - but lots of parents, friends and visitors will support the marchers, enjoy the touching tribute to veterans, hear the warm-hearted speeches and applaud the winners of bicycle-decoration prizes.
Paraders will start at 10 a.m. on Oakridge Road in Purdys. The parade proceeds along Routes 116 and 22 and stops at the Westchester Exceptional Childrens School, where nonagenarian Geller, Iraq war veteran Matthew Engelhardt and Supervisor Warren Lucas will speak briefly.
After the ceremonial placement of wreaths at the monument, the roll call and the playing of taps, everyone will retire down the street to Purdys Field for a holiday lunch of hot dogs and soda.
