NORTH SALEM, N.Y. – The Purdys-based charitable organization Friends of Karen has named NYU food scientist Patricia Lobenfeld to its board of directors.

Friends of Karen, founded in 1978, helps the families of children with life-threatening illnesses deal with the trauma and financial burden. It was named for 16-year-old Karen MacInnes, who was battling a terminal genetic disorder.

Lobenfeld teaches in the Department of Nutrition, Food Studies and Public Health at New York University. She has written several books about food science and writes a blog for

She is a member of the International Association of Culinary Professionals and the American Institute of Wine and Food.

“Trish has been actively volunteering with us for years, and has been an effective advocate for Friends of Karen’s mission,” said Board President Pamela Hervey. “I know she will play a meaningful role in Friends of Karen’s growth.”

“I am honored to join the board,” said Lobenfeld. “Friends of Karen is a resource like no other, providing vital and comprehensive services that help the daily stresses and give parents more time to love.”

Since its founding, Friends of Karen has reached out to more than 12,400 children and their families. It has achieved a four-star rating, the highest award given by the independent charity appraisal group Charity Navigator.
