NORTH SALEM, N.Y. - The Croton Falls Fire Station on Titicus Road was decked out for entertaining on Sunday as firefighters prepared all-you-can-eat breakfasts for hungry neighbors. Guests were seated at round tables, adorned with white tablecloths, and were served and bussed by a couple of North Salem Boy Scouts, who earned community service points for their efforts.
Joan Van Scoy said she comes to the event for many year. Its hot, its well-cooked and you dont have to make your own breakfast, she said. Her son, Peter, has been treasurer of the department for over twenty years. Hes been a volunteer since he was 16, she said. Now hes going on 65.
Peter Van Scoy meanwhile was at the door, greeting guests and collecting fees. How has the department changed in the last 50 years? The equipment has gotten a lot better, he said. The rules have gotten tougher and safer. And the protective gear has improved 100 percent.
Backstage in the kitchen, firefighter Bobby Soto was scrambling eggs as fast as firefighter Kay Petroff could crack them. By 9:45 a.m. he had cooked over 125 eggs. What is his secret? A little salt, a little pepper, a little milk. Fluff em up and put em on the grill. The kitchen team was also assisted by a couple of ready Boy Scouts.
The Croton Falls Fire Department presents a number of events throughout the year to raise money for various causes. Sundays breakfast receipts were earmarked for the North Salem High School Scholarship Fund.
The department is currently recruiting new members. Volunteers must be at least 16 years old, must pass a medical exam, and must live or work in the Croton Falls Fire District. See the website to download an application.
