A new biography of North Salem funnyman David Letterman says his 2009 sex scandal sent him spiraling into depression with Letterman comparing it to "“having killed your family in a car crash,” according to the New York Post.

The legendary retired late-night host told Jason Zinoman, the author of “Letterman: The Last Giant of Late Night,” about his bout of depression after he was forced to admit he had affairs with several female employees, the Post reported.

“I’m in hell. I will always be in hell until the day after when I will go to hell,” the “Late Show” frontman said at the time, Zinoman wrote.

Most of the people in Letterman’s life, including his family and some of his staff, were unaware of the affairs, including one with his longtime assistant, Stephanie Birkitt, the book reveals.

After his confession, Zinoman wrote that Letterman didn't want to go outside: “Outside I was scared. Scared as I’ve ever been in my life,” Letterman says in the book.

The affairs were exposed when Birkitt’s ex-boyfriend found her diary and tried to blackmail Letterman for $2 million. Letterman refused, and came forward himself, the Post said.

Letterman retired last year after 33 years on the air.
