What’s Happening Around North Salem This Weekend

NORTH SALEM, N.Y. – Flowers, crafts and local food feature in the weekend’s events around North Salem.

Friday, Sept. 21

Essential Tremor Workshop: 1:30 to 4 p.m. A two-part workshop and lecture about essential tremor, a neurological disorder that causes hands to shake, heads to bob and voices to quaver. The first part will center on tai chi instruction with expert George Chen. The second part will be a discussion among attendees with a Q&A session. There is no charge, but a $10 donation is requested for the tai chi session. Somers Public Library, 82 Primrose St. in Reis Park.

Lasdon Flower Show: 2 to 3:30 p.m. This is the opening day of “It’s a Zoo,” a flower show dedicated to animals in all their floral forms. Visitors on Friday will be the first to see which exhibits won awards. The show continues Sunday. There is no admission charge. Lasdon Park and Arboretum, Route 35, Somers.

Saturday, Sept. 22

Somers Women’s Club Tag Sale: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The gigantic annual sale of household items, jewelry, children’s clothing, toys, books, small furniture and more will take place, rain or shine. Reis Park, Primrose Street (Route 139), Somers.

Muscoot Basketmaker’s Make & Take: 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Bring your own scissors, mug, lunch and a few dollars for for a session of crafts and fun. Registration is $16. Activity Center at Muscoot Farm, Route 100, 1.5 miles south of Route 35 in Somers.

Sunday, Sept. 23

Farmers Market: 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Fresh produce, meats, cheese, soaps, candles, honey, maple syrup, flowers, fish and delicacies from local farmers and artisans are available. The Muscoot Farmers Market will continue every Sunday through October. Muscoot Farm, Route 100, 1.5 miles south of Route 35 in Somers.

Fall "Fun"gi Hike: 1 to 3 p.m. Mushrooms (fungi) grow year-round. Join Zaac Chaves, a member of the CT/NY Mycological Association, on a trek through the forest in search of local mushrooms and learn about their role in the environment. Muscoot Farm, Route 100, 1.5 miles south of Route 35 in Somers.

Gardens Filled With Life: 3 to 4 p.m. Landscape architect and author Carolyn Summers will talk about the ways that native plants help support the environment and will make suggestions for local plantings. The lecture is co-sponsored by the Ruth Keeler Memorial Library and the North Salem Open Land Foundation. Ruth Keeler Memorial Library, 276 Titicus Road, North Salem.
