NORTH SALEM, N.Y. The goblins and witches are getting an early start this weekend at North Salems Ruth Keeler Library when actor Alan Sklar drops by Sunday to narrate a pair of chilling stories by Edgar Allan Poe.
Reading out loud is an old-fashioned art, said Library Director Carolyn Reznick. People flocked from all over to hear Dickens read from his works.
You may not recognize Sklar by sight but chances are you have heard his voice. Sklar has done voice-overs for hundreds of commercials and documentaries. He also has narrated more than 100 audio books and appeared on TV and in stage plays. If you have ever taken an audio tour of the White House or New Yorks Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum, why, that was Sklar ushering you around.
Sklar will be reading The Cask of Amontillado and The Tell-Tale Heart, considered by many to be Poes greatest story. The first tells the tale of a man so beset with anger that he entices a friend deep into the cellar and finds a way of evening the score.
The Tell-Tale Heart is another type of murder story. The story-teller defends his own sanity while he describes in gory detail the way in which he killed and dismembered his victim.
Well be serving wine and refreshments, said Reznick, on a lighter note. Its not often you get the opportunity to enjoy a glass of wine while someone reads aloud to you. And Alan Sklar has a wonderful voice.
There is no charge for Sundays performance of Poe tales. The event starts at 3 p.m.
More appropriate for small children, the library will offer sessions of spooky stories and scary songs at 10:30 a.m. Oct. 27, 30 and 31. Children are invited to wear their Halloween costumes. Kids of all ages also are welcome to come to the library at 4 p.m. Oct. 25 to make trick-or-treat bags.
