Newman, the church’s music director, will perform George Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue.” Written in 1924, it combines classical and jazz elements and helped establish Gershwin as a great American composer.

Newman will also perform Ludwig van Beethoven’s “Symphony No. 2,” which was written around 1802 at the time when the great German composer’s hearing was rapidly failing.

The symphony still “exudes youthful energy, optimism and earthy humor,” concert series organizers said.

Newman will premier one of his own compositions, “Overture in C.”

The BCC’s gala Christmas concert, set for Dec. 9, will feature the entire “Brandenburg Concerti” by Johann Sebastian Bach.

St. Matthew’s Church is at 382 Cantitoe St., Bedford.

Tickets are $35 for the Nov. 4 concert and $40 for the Dec. 9 concert. Refreshments will be available.
