North Salem High School Blood Drive Memorializes Elizabeth Butler

NORTH SALEM, N.Y. -- It might seem like a long time ago, but really it was only 11 years ago that 17-year-old Elizabeth Butler was murdered by her ex-boyfriend while she was a senior at North High Salem High School.

North Salem High School will hold a blood drive in memory of former student Elizabeth Butler from 1 to 7 p.m. on Friday, April 1, at the school.

In an effort to honor Butler, and to help others in need, the school will hold its annual Elizabeth Butler Memorial Blood Drive on Friday, April 1, from 1 to 7 p.m. at the school on June Road. 

According to the American Red Cross:

  • Every two seconds someone in the U.S. needs blood.
  • Approximately 36,000 units of red blood cells are needed every day in the U.S.
  • Nearly 7,000 units of platelets and 10,000 units of plasma are needed daily in the U.S.
  • Nearly 21 million blood components are transfused each year in the U.S.
  • The blood type most often requested by hospitals is type O.
  • The blood used in an emergency is already on the shelves before the event occurs.
  • Sickle cell patients can require frequent blood transfusions throughout their lives.
  • Many cancer patients of them will need blood, sometimes daily, during their chemotherapy treatment.
  • A single car accident victim can require as many as 100 pints of blood.
