The site formerly known as Joe’s Getty Station, at Hardscrabble Road and Fields Lane, will become a totally refurbished and rebuilt BP station, if all goes according to plan.
“We’re under a tight time restriction with BP,” said Johnny Sinis, who presented the project at the April 3 Planning Board meeting. “So we want to get the plans in order and the approvals in place as soon as possible.”
The convenience store would be a building of about 1,800 square feet, and the automotive shop about 1,000 square feet. The fuel pumps would be housed under a canopy. All fuel tanks would be new, and whatever remains of the older structures would be completely refurbished. Particular attention would be paid to appearance, Sinis said, with minimal fencing and maximum landscaping, new paving and carefully planned circulation.
A service station on the northbound side of I-684 would alleviate traffic and congestion at the Shell Station near the southbound exit, the board said. Sinis said the town would benefit from increased tax revenues and the residents by the convenience of having a quick shopping stop.
Planning Board Chair Cynthia Curtis said the board is most concerned about the site’s ambiance. “We like to ‘soften’ things,’’ she said, referring to the general lighting, fencing and landscaping. “Keep the lights as low [in height] as possible, and as soft as possible, not blazing.”
The board also recommended an immediate careful review of the town code regarding the size and placement of signs and similar issues.
On behalf of the board, Curtis said as soon as the architects have their plans and specs in order, the board would be willing to act on approvals or amendments.
