The shooting happened on Monday, Nov. 18 just before 1 p.m., when two people were seen exchanging gunfire in the area of 311 North Ave. in New Rochelle near the city's transit center parking garage, New Rochelle Police Captain J. Collins Coyne said on Tuesday, Nov. 19.
Arriving officers soon found a victim with gunshot wounds in the area of Huguenot Street and North Avenue and began giving medical aid to him. The victim, a 22-year-old New Rochelle resident, was taken to a nearby hospital where he is listed in serious but stable condition.
According to Coyne, the victim, whose name was not released, was found in possession of a firearm.
Following the shooting, police established crime scenes at Huguenot Street between LeCount Place and North Avenue as well as the area in front of 311 North Ave., which spanned from Garden Street to the train overpass. Both of these areas were closed off as detectives processed evidence and were reopened later in the day.
A second suspect involved in the incident, described as a Black man wearing red pants and a black jacket, ran from the scene before police arrived. Authorities are now pursuing leads and following up on information that may lead them to him, Coyne said.
Anyone with any information about the shooting or the suspect's whereabouts is asked to call New Rochelle Police at 914-654-2300 or submit tips anonymously at 914-632-COPS.
